  • What is electrolysis?
Electrology is the science of permanent hair removal. The term electrolysis is used to describe all methods of PERMANENT hair removal. There are three modalities used today that fall under the heading of electrolysis. Galvanic uses a direct current to produce a chemical reaction in the hair follicle. Thermolysis uses an alternating current to produce heat in the follicle. The blend method combines galvanic current with a thermolysis current resulting in a combination of heat and a chemical reaction. All three modalities destroy hair germ cells. Electrolysis is a safe, time-tested method of permanent hair removal. A sterile disposable probe is inserted into each hair follicle followed by a brief application of one of the three modalities listed above. The hair hair detaches from the follicle and is extracted. Electrolysis is safe, efficient and permanent!
  • Which modality does Electrolysis by Kim, LLC use?
The modality used by Electrolysis by Kim, LLC is thermolysis. Using state-of-the-art technology, a minute amount of electricity is applied to the hair follicle. This small amount of electrical current causes atoms in the tissue to become excited. The agitated atoms vibrate against each other and generate heat by friction. Surprisingly, the probe itself does not get hot. The tissue around the needle, however, becomes hot because of this agitation taking place brought on by the current. This heating is more intense in electrically conductive substances such as saltwater. Human tissue and blood contain abundant saltwater. So it is the moisture in the tissue surrounding the probe which becomes heated - not the probe. This process destroys the hair growth cells. Therefore, the regenerative ability of the hair follicle is permanently eliminated.
  • Why should I choose electrolysis over other hair removal methods?
Electrolysis is the only true permanent hair removal method and the only permanent treatment recognized by the FDA. Electrolysis is a time-tested method that was invented over 100 years ago to remove irritating, ingrown eyelash hairs. Over the course of this time there have been no serious side effects recorded. It is safe and it is permanent. Unlike other hair removal options, professionally performed electrolysis eliminates unwanted hair, permanently, with unsurpassed results. Moreover, it does so for the largest variety of skin and hair types. Laser hair removal and IPL can work for reducing the hair in large areas, but the skin and hair conditions must be perfect for the specific method chosen. Laser and IPL will not remove lighter hair. Some people also experience paradoxical hypertrichosis after these treatments. Instead of removing hair, laser treatment can actually promote hair growth. Waxing, threading and tweezing are TEMPORARY methods. Additionally, they may cause an increase in hair growth activity. Depilatories and shaving can cause an irritation to the skin while the hair regrows quickly. These methods can require a lifetime of maintenance. Many can appear inexpensive but cost more due to long term use and are found to be inconvenient. Electrolysis is the only FDA approved method for permanent hair removal. No other hair removal solution claims such universal acceptability and success.
  • Do electrologists follow appropriate infection control procedures?
The American Electrology Association has written Standards for Infection Control following the most recent recommendations from the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Electrolysis by Kim, LLC adheres to these standards.
  • How many treatments are required?
The number of treatments necessary varies with each client. Each treatment session can range from 15 minutes to more than an hour depending on the area being treated as well as the quantity of hair present. Electrolysis takes an AVERAGE time-frame of 12-24 months to reach completion. It can also take an AVERAGE of 4-6 months of prescribed treatments before the permanent elimination of hair growth becomes noticeable. In the beginning, treatments are longer in duration and more frequent. Over time, treatment sessions will become shorter and be spaced further and further apart. Clients dealing with hormonal imbalances, medical disorders (Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome, thyroid disorders, etc.) and certain medications may need additional maintenance treatments after the original hair problem has been resolved.
  • Are hairs eliminated in one treatment or is regrowth to be expected?
All hairs treated can be eliminated permanently with one treatment. It's important to keep in mind that "undergrowth" (hair that has not yet hit the surface of the skin) always exists. Often times these hairs (undergrowth) are percieved as "regrowth" when they do hit the surface of the skin when in fact they are new hairs which have not been treated yet. All hairs are not visible at the same time due to the individual growth cycle of each follicle. Sometimes, very deep and course hair cannot always be eliminated with one treatment; thus, successful removal of these hairs may require additional treatments.
  • What does electrolysis feel like?
Electrolysis usually does not cause any significant discomfort. Some individuals notice a brief sensation with each pulse while others do not detect anything. External variables can influence individual responses to a pulse. Modern electrolysis methods have reduced any discomfort to a mere tingling. Settings can be modified to increase comfort or tolerance and if necessary, a topical anesthetic can be used.
  • Does electrolysis have any side effects on the skin?
Immediately following treatment, it is normal for the skin to sometimes look red and irritated, There can also be slight swelling. Darker skinned clients may experience hiperpigmentation. Scabbing is possible on the body. Some of these skin reactions can last anywhere from a few minutes to a few days. The most important thing to remember is that ALL of these side effects are TEMPORARY and part of the healing process. You will be be provided with post treatment instructions that will help in the healing of your skin and will also help to reduce the temporary side effects.
  • Can unwanted hair be removed from anywhere on the body?
Electrolysis works on all skin and hair types and on all areas of the body. These areas include eyebrows, chin, upper & lower lip, jaw line & sides of the face, nape of neck, breasts, underarms, abdomen, bikini line, legs, toes, and back. Based on a personal and confidential consultation, your electrologist will design a treatment plan that addresses your specific hair removal needs.
